You have probably heard of the Jungian idea of the “shadow.” In very simplistic terms, it is anything within ourselves that is hidden from our consciousness. The term is usually applied to something negative or that we consider a negative.

One of the ways it can show itself is in our projections and dislikes. For example, if we strongly dislike a person’s quality – say we are extremely bothered by how arrogant our friend John is – we are having such an over the top reaction to John’s arrogance because in John we see our own shadow, our own arrogance, which we do not want to admit to ourselves.

I have mixed feelings about this theory of the “dark” shadow. I mean, sometimes someone bothers you just because of their own issues, not yours 😂

What I find more interesting is the part of the shadow that is not as often mentioned: the “golden” shadow.

A golden shadow is any part of you that you are not aware of and that is positive. The way it shows up is in your admiration and appreciation.
For example, say you really admire how your friend Jane is brave, how she is not afraid of speaking her mind, even though some people might judge her for it.

Well, consider that this could mean you either do the same (and do not realize you do!), or you have the potential, the inner quality, the desire to do what Jane does – just in your own way. All you have to do is open yourself up to your courage and ability to speak your mind.

So here’s a fun exercise: today, take a few minutes to make a list of 3-10 people you know and write down what you admire and/or appreciate about them.
And then consider that any or all that you listed could very well be your golden shadow.

Psst: if you are ready to work at your fullest potential, consider coaching
